Germany, the land of metal in all its forms... and from there comes this thrash metal band. Frank, the bass player answered our questions:
As a thrash metal band..Which are your main influences? Are they the big
thrash bands of the eighties or maybe some nineties band like Pantera for
example?
We live still in the eighties, haha. Slayer, Kreator, Sepultura, Coroner, SOD,
Suicidal Tendencies, Anthrax, Overkill, Testament etc. - that's our world.
Pantera are from the eighties, too. Are there some good thrashbands from the
nineties :-)?
Since you participated in 3 tribute records with Dwell Records...how is
your relationship with that label?
We've recorded five songs for DWELL RECORDS, but that was all. Nothing more
was planned. It was something like this: "Hey, are you interested in recording
a song from XYZ?" - "Yes". So we covered a song and recorded it. He had
released it and some months later he asked again. It was a good relationship,
I think, haha.
Are you recording your second full length? How is the process going?
We've finished the song writing process and at the moment we are doing a pre -
production. I hope we can record the stuff during the winter and release it in
spring. By the way - we are looking for a label releasing our stuff. But of
course we will release it by ourselves in the case of not finding one.
Which are your projects for next year? I read that you were recording "Riff
Raff" and "Wearing and Tearing" for AC/DC and Led Zeppelin tributes. Do you
like doing covers?
We've done the AC/DC and the LZ songs last year, in 2000. The one and only
project for next year is the longplay CD, but I think, that'll be enough. Most
time of this year (2001) we spend with songwriting and renovating our
rehearsing - room, haha. It was very interesting and a lot of fun to do the
covers, to put the classic songs in "Wasteland - stile". But we don't play the
stuff on concerts, sometimes EVIL DEAD.
How was the recording and tour for "Genuine Parts"?
We recorded it during ten days in autumn 97 and released it in may 98. The day
after Andre finished the drum tracks, he had an accident with his car and he
had to stay some days in hospital. Tobias and me were in the car, too, but
nothing happened to us, so we could finish the recordings without any
problems. There wasn't a tour, haha. We released the CD and played on the
"Fuck the Commerce II" festival, and some single gigs. We haven't got a label
or a professional management. It's hard enough to get some single gigs, you
know. There are only a few people interested into undergroundmusic. When we
organized something in the past we could be lucky to get 50 spectators. The
last gig we played in front of eight people. This is a thing I don't
understand: People pay 50 - 80 DM for major-acts, but complain about 8-12 DM
for undergroundconcerts, with three or four bands that play with heart and
guts.
What makes CUT-Tonstudio so special for you (since the MCD and the first CD
were recorded there)?
We know the owner for a long time, that's it, haha. It was not very expensive, it had a good sound, and it was near a very great greek restaurant. But it closed in early 2000. Now we are recording our stuff in our rehearsing room, we recorded the sampler songs there already. Near our rehearsing - room opened
a Kebab - Snack - Bar some months ago, so I think it's possible to survive the recordings for our next CD, haha.
Which are the differences between Frank G. and André Ipfling drumming technique?
Frank G. played a simple and straight stile, André has got a good technical
background, lots of variation and is faster.
A question for guitar players. Who are your favourite players? Do you
studied music theory in order to learn how to make Wasteland´s solos?
After
you listened to a typical Wasteland guitarsolo, you'll know - no scales, just
chaos with a feeling. Kramer has a theoretical background, Andre learned
playing drums and percussions at a music school. Stephan, Tobias and I have
never learned something theoretical.
What can you tell about the "Mare Tranquilitatis" MCD now that years have
passed since its release?
It's sold out and it was a little gem in that time.
There are five songs on it and we play three of them still at our concerts.
Timeless stuff, you know. It was a very good start for us, and it was the
correct decision to release it as a MCD and not as a demo - tape.
10- How do you believe that the band is going to evolve in the future?
I don't know, haha. Nobody knows, what'll happen in the future. We will always
do our own thing, but I don't think that we will play pop music next
year.
Anything more that you want to say?
Thanks a lot for the interview and your support. If there are bands out there
which are interested in trading a CD - don't be shy and ask.
