What can you tell me about "Slaughtering Thoughts"? How has it been doing since its release last year?
[Martl] Grind On Federico! First let me thank you for your support and this inti. After the release of "Slaughtering Thoughts" we have played many shows to spread the new material live. We have organized the United Underground Days and played very very often gigs. Sometimes it was very hard to play so often, cause we have normal jobs and time is a really big problem for us, that is also the cause that we haven`t toured this year. The most surprise are the reactions of the new album. We have never thought that this piece of music earns so many good reactions and bring us new contacts. At the moment we write new songs for "HateRed Hell Within" and plan another split 7" for the end of this year. Our biggest "problem" is time - we don`t want lose it for the songwriting-process, so we must stop our live -activities a little bit.
Do you think that there are things that you would like to change on "Slaughtering Thoughts"? Something that you think that it could have been done better?
[Martl] Hmm, perhaps little changes . For example the vocals or the bass-sound, but all in all we are very statisfied with this record. You must know that Bibber our studioman were in contact with Erik Rutan (Hate Eternal, Morbid Angel) and got some tipps for the recording, so we are really satisfied. It was also the third time we work with Bibber, he know us and the style we play so the work together was realy good.
How is your new album "HateRed Hell Within" going to be?
[Martl] At the moment we have three songs ready for "HateRed Hell Within". The material become more and more similar with our vision of brutal music. We want to mix brutality, feelings and technical skills together as one very strong flow. The "red line" in each song become stronger, but that means not we lose brutality or technical licks - we`ll become more various, more different feelings in the music. We are no party or fun-and, so we practice and work hard on the new material, of course we have fun with our music, but we are diciplined freaks who know what they want. All in all "HatRed Hell Within" will be the next step on our way of musical vision.
Do you still have help from Daniel? Does he help you with composition?
[Martl] If we would need help, Daniel would help us certainly, but we work as a three piece band very good and the chemie in the band is fantastic, so we "need" no help. Daniel plays by Reactor, a power-thrashband, more the melodic-sytle he can`t play with Profanity. We are very good friends, but we go not longer the same musical way. During the time I left the band he recorded with Tomml and Armin the first album and the split 7" with Lividity (US). After the recordings for the 7" I came back to Profanity and Daniel changed to Reactor. It was a very friendly and fair line-up change.
There are certain titles from your songs that I find strange: "Strangulated with Thoughts", "Drowned in Dusk" or "The Transitory"...what are their lyrics about?
[Martl] First I must tell you that we have not the typicall deathmetal lyrics. We are no splatter-gore, politics or violence -freaks. I think we have our own style, it is like a picture in our head we describe. Sometimes a figure, Morething plays a important role in it. This "person" is a soulish being, not real but not only a ghost. It is very difficult to describe the Morething-story, perhaps that this being is a neverending nightmare in the brain of special people - I am really sorry that I cannot tell you "more things" about it.
Are you satisfied with your deal with Cudgel Agency?
[Martl] Yes we are! Jens and Besen, the two guys behind Cudgel Agency work very hard for all their bands, they are freaks with great idealism and undergroundspirit! They also organize the great "Fuck The Commerce" - Festivals in Germany, the biggest deathfestival in Europe with a fantastic undergroundfeeling and a lot of international killerbands like Cryptopsy, Krisiun, Dying Fetus, Cannibal Corpse, Vader and a lot of undergroundbands worldwide.
Both work only for the musik and their vision, we respect the another and are friends.
Are you still playing songs from the era when there were four members in the band? Why did you decide to change to a trio format?
[Martl] We play two, sometimes three songs from these years. They are a little bit different than the newer songs but we like them. We haven`t decide it to become a three piece band, this situation had come form alone. After the demo-times Armin and I changed to Profanity, with Tomml and Mike we were a four piece band. On our second gig Mike was ill, but we wan`t not cancelled the gig - we played as a trio and after this gig we stayed as a three piece band cause Mike want not longer play the new brutal style in our music. In former years we searched for another guitarplayer, but it is very difficult in our area to find someone who have the same spirit and the musical skills. We stopped the search, cause we have no time for it and we are very satisfied with this situation, if sometimes a freak like us stands in the front of our practiceroom and will say: here I am! - we would say: let`s try to do it! We will see what the future bring us.
How was your experience in the United Underground Days festivals?
[Martl] These days were great. We played in Germany, Swiss, Austria and Belgium an on all places the bands, organizers and the freaks were killer. The "ungerdround"-feeling, the motto: from freaks for freaks were always in the air. Everyone helped another, working with the backline or other things, this together as one brutal family was a fantastic exprience for all. It was very hard to be organizer and musician on these days, both is very strange, but we don`t miss these experiences!
What impact had in Profanity´s music your return to the band?
[Martl] My rest, or my going from Profanity and the return to them have nothing to do with the music. Two lovely persons in my familiy died, these were the cause for my outtime by Profanity. I had to leave the band because I had not the time and the feelings in these years to play music.
How different was your bass playing when you started the band with Tom compared to the way you play bass now?
[Martl] Oh, it is a interessting question I`d never thought about it. I like my instument very much, I think the basical spirit is the same since the begining days. I have learned more about my bass, during the years I hope I became a better bassplayer, but the most important thing for me is that I can play things I can`t talk about it over my instument - thats the same when started playing. In the beginning you can`t play exactly the music you want because you know not so much about the instrument. From year to year you and your instrument become one, thatz the mainpoint for me. Perhaps it is stupid, but for me my bass is like a girlfriend.
I know that you recorded a Possessed cover, "The Exorcist". Are you a band that likes doing covers? Which are the most common in your live shows?
[Martl] Yes, we like some covers. On the last shows we played "The Exorcist" in our normal programm and for supplement Terrorizers "Fear of Napalm". We like both bands very much and with these songs the freaks in front of the stage have a lot of fun and make many action. Sometimes a friend from another band or another freak sing the Terrorizer cover, it is a very cool feeling to be a four pice band for this moment, a great experience. for the coming split 7" in the end of this year we cover an old song from another great band, which every deathmetal-maniac knows.
Is it possible for German bands like you to make a living of playing your music ?
[Martl] As a deathmetal band I would say: no! It is too difficult to be so popular to earn enough money to life from your music, for deathmetal expecially. But that is not important, we are satisfied with our situation. We work in our jobs to make our music and can life our own life, not the life of hunted musicians who "must" record a new album to have meal for the next day. If you see Atrocity, they started as a great technical and brutal deathmetal band, now they play modern gothic/electrical music, I don`t like it, but they can life from their music now - you know what I mean!
Are there any plans to release "Into the Unforeseen" and "The Transitory" demos on CD?
[Martl] No, we are not in the situation to do this. We are very realistic people, I don`t think that many persons are interesst in the both demos. If someone want the demos we copy them, that is no problem - feel free and contact us. The future and our new songs are more important at the moment than the old stuff. We like the demos realy, but we grow up too.
Any final words
