Interview with Paola Bianchi and Luca Valisi from Ludmila:

How would you describe Ludmila´s music to people who don´t know it?

Paola&Luca: Ludmila is an indipendent musical project, conceived, produced and released by Paola Bianchi (voice) and Luca Valisi (bass and drum machine). Minimalist music combined with evocative sounds and melodies, and suggestive but "scratchy" atmosphere - thanks also to movies and slides used during live show- gives rise to such a special performance. Since the beginning the duo has been characterized by an intensive live performing, completely self-attended. Genuine audience interaction, whose most important moment is live performance, is Ludmila's chief interest.

Since Luca is playing bass and drum machine....how important is the bass to Ludmila´s music? Is it more important than guitar?

Luca: Of course, I am a bass player since I was 15, so I express myself better with this instrument...I have played guitar only to complete the arrangements of our first demo, but in our last album we choose a guitarist that we both love, Mirko Rizzi (Daniele Brusaschetto for Radon Records), 'cause he adds to Ludmila's sound an experimental and noise atmosphere without distort the main melodies created by the fusion of voice and bass.

How is the process of composition of a Ludmila song ?

Paola: We start with bass'melodies(Luca is Ludmila's "mind" !!!) then I add the lyrics, that must have special meaning and sound, according with my style...we are very impulsive, we usually create a song immediately after we have heard a drum machine pattern or the electric mixer's noise !!!

What can you tell me about the two albums that you are composing? Are they different from your previous recordings?

Luca: "Disadorne" is not very different from our first demo : we still used bass and voice for the whole work....but in few more experimental songs we have used drum 'n bass/trip hop patterns and the noise guitar of Mirko....

Paola: "Stella Splendens" is for us an inusual work, 'cause it contains three "ethereal" Ludmila's songs and five tracks of medieval original chants and polyphonies performed only with voice...the theme that binds these ancient and modern "prayers" is the Shining Star that brings a powerful light and also clouds and darkness...

Paola&Luca: ....and in these days came out our last new release "Anamin" feat. DoktorT !! a mixture of electronic-post rock , experimental and noise music with an unusual group !

How important is Andrea Garavaglia´s help to achieve what you want to express with Ludmila´s music?

Luca: Andrea is one of my best friend, we met at high school and I used to play with Mesmerize, his heavy metal band. He is a wonderful drummer and supports Ludmila. He is also an eccellentsound eingeneer, we record all our works in his Studios and he is also our counseller!

Paola: Our music needs to be recorded in a polished and clear way and Andrea is able to create it, that's because he has a lot of experience and perfectly knows the evolution of Ludmila's sound.

Which is the concept behind Ludmila´s lyrics?

Paola: It depends on the songs...in this period the Nature is my main inspiration: I am attracted by trees and rivers colours....in the past I wrote a lot of meditatives and oniric texts but now I am more serene: first song's lyrics have been inspired by some Russian authors as Solzenicyn and Salamov who wrote about GuLag, now I'm looking for quietness...

How important are slides and films in your live shows?

Paola: They are the complements of our lyrics and melodies , they create the right atmosphere , they are in fact the visual projection of our meanings: there is not a complete live show without our slides and movies...we usually use abstract paintings or black and white wretched people photos that best represent Ludmila's creativity...and we love to play with a Tarkovskij or Vertov video on our backs!!!

Something more that you want to add?

Paola&Luca: We would like to thank the whole Musicextreme Staff for his support!!! If someone would contact us, our address is Luca Valisi, via Cavallari 29 - 20013 Magenta (Mi) Italy; e-mail:ludmila1@inwind.it
