Interview with Ollie - vocalist of the band
How is "Pathway..." doing in this first days since its release? Are you
satisfied with it?
Yeah, definitely, it’s our best work yet and that’s what people are saying too. Feedback so far has been great, I hope sales will be! We are totally satisfied with the sound and how each song has come out.
How would you compare "Pathway to Deviance" with "Inhuman" musically?
The songs are written similarly on both albums, we’ve had a change of lead guitarist who has a different style to our last. Mike’s drumming has got better and better and this shows on ‘Pathway…’.
What happened to your first recording? Was it banned from the stores? Why?
‘Gore and Perversion’ never made it to the stores, it was banned once it was pressed and quality checked. It was re-released by a label from Norway in a censored form a year or two after all that shit. It’s cover and lyrics were extremely obscene and it earned us the title of the ‘obscene hard-gore perverts’. This album has THE sickest lyrics ever, any band can challenge us on that one. I am pleased that we produced this brutal bastard of an album.
Is brutality the main goal in Desecration´s music?
Not really, we play brutal music but more important is the good song writing that we enjoy listening to, brutal death metal is great to listen to but we make sure that ours is not boring as it can be if brutality is the only ingredient.
How were the songs in "Pathway..." composed?
Usually the music is written first and then I fit lyrics to it. This was the case with ‘Pathway…’ too, as usual few songs were left to last minute and rushed before entering the studio.
What can you tell me about your tour with Enslaved?
This was only a three date tour but it was on a tour bus so it seemed even shorter than that. They were great guys to get on with, we’ve gigged with a lot of the big bands but not supported a tour apart from our American one with Monstrosity.
Which are your memories on the "Gore and Perversion" recording?
We were inexperienced back then, having only recorded one demo, studio work was still new to us. Just really doing our best, the band were pretty crap back then though, we weren’t very tight, but the engineer who worked with us made it worse. Something that I will never forget is that there was a judo club above the studio and in the recording you can here someone being thrown around above us!
Do you conside Desecration a cult band in Europe?
Used to, but now we have moved away from that, we don’t want attention for the wrong reason. Anyone can be controversial, even with no talent at all. Having a following is great, but I certainly don’t push for anything anymore, I just want to write and play muic I enjoy and if people dig it, cool.
What do you think of the UK death metal scene in these days?
People think the scene here is coming back, it’s much more underground now which is good, the fans are more diehard than before, there used to be a load of ‘weekend warriors’ but they fucked off.
Something more to add?
Thanks for the interview my friend! ‘Pathway to Deviance’ is now out and it kicks arse seriously. Also, Gore and Perversion 2002 be out in the summer which will kick arse too. It’s re-recorded, re-produced and re-gurgitated.
