How has been "Enslaved the Weak" received?
In generally we got good responses. However there are two groups of
people. The first one (fortunately larger) thinks we overcame our
previous album and like it more. The second group consists of people who prefer maximum brutality and they like THE ART OF BLASPHEMY more. They do not look for anything else than brutality and maximum speed tempos.
Also many people say we are a copy of Morbid Angel. Some of them like it and some of them think we should be more original. But for me originality is not the main attribute. We create music naturally without any intention to be original or similar to any famous band!
Which are the main differences that the new album has with "The Art
of Blasphemy"?
THE ART OF BLASPHEMY was created on purpose to be totally fast - extreme
brutal blast. After our first CD KILL THE THOUGHT ON CHRIST that
includes mainly slower tempos due to poor drummer we wanted to show we are able to create something devastating. We managed to because we had a good drummer for this intention. I would say we did not change our
patterns or our musical features but we maybe included some slower parts to ENSLAVE THE WEAK. These parts are the main reason for statements like DEMENTOR is a copy of Morbid Angel. However we did not change so much.
If you listen to THE ART OF BLASPHEMY more carefully you can realise a
lot of melodies but they are played in higher speed. When you listen to
our music in concerts where we mix songs from all our albums you can not
realise any dramatic differences in our music.
How would you define the music that Dementor does?
I think we play classical form of death metal. However I would say we
play blasphemous death metal. This label comes from our lyrics that are
full of blasphemy and hate towards Christianity.
How do you compose the songs?
I think it is common process. Guitarists make up some new riffs at home
and then present it at the rehearsal. Then follows matching it with drum
parts and later some lyrics is stowed into this finalised song.
How has been the tour with Vader doing?
Yeah, it was cool! Unfortunately we played only two concerts because
some dates were cancelled because of some stupid reasons. Anyway we
spent almost one week with this great band. I am really glad because of
their behaviour. They approached to us with respect and were really
friendly. Firstly we thought Shambo, the bass player is strange a bit
but in the end we liked him. He is quite nervous man and he always
curses! It is easy to make him angry. Some concert promoters had a
chance to learn it! Well, both concerts were totally great. In Minsk we
had 700 and in Moscow 400 people. We liked it much!
Are you satisfied with Osmose as your label?
So far we can not complain despite we expected some larger concert
support from them. Unfortunately we must wait until we prove people are interested in DEMENTOR. I hope the time will come after we record our new album. OSMOSE are really honest and fair label. It is real change between them and our previous labels. Easily, they are professionals and it reflects in quality of their work. No reason to complain!
Looking back...What do you think about "The Church Dies"?
I like this record. It was our first professional record. Unfortunately
it came out only on MC format despite ISP planned to make it on CD too.
In the end they did not have enough money to realise it. I think they
are thinking about THE CHURCH DIES on CD again. Maybe it would be good
investment for them in time when DEMENTOR gets larger interest from
fans.
Are you always composing? For example...do you have new songs that
you compose on the tour that you are doing now?
We never compose new songs on tour. There is no space for it and also
bad conditions for activity like this. We need quiet environment for it
therefore we compose at home.
Why do you consider the Minsk show in 2000 your best show?
Now we maybe played better shows or maybe equally great but all were
played in C.I.S. countries. We consider Minsk like the best because we
had 600 people like headliner playing first time there! The atmosphere
was totally crazy. Every band would like it for sure! It was in May 2000
but this year we played another cool gigs in Kiev (600 like headliners),
Minsk (700) with Vader! People there like death metal much and are
really friendly. I think DEMENTOR has good position there.
I know that you have been touring in Europe...Are there any plans of
touring in USA or in South America?
Not yet! We are not that popular to tour in America. Maybe we might
support some known band there but in this case we would need some
financial support from the label or some really exciting offer from that
part of world. We would like to show up there once but we should wait
for some better timing.
Which is your opinion on the Slovakian metal scene? And the opinion
on the whole Eastern Europe metal scene?
I think there are many great bands in Slovakia but in generally they do
not receive as large support as Swedish or German bands do. They would
need to get some chance and they might make some break through. Eastern
scene is strong but I do not like when people separate us from Western
Europe in expectation of something weaker. Be sure we have as good bands
as Germany if not better. Those are just prejudices what defends our
bands to be fully accepted.
Can you explain a little bit the lyrics on "Enslave the Weak"?
We focused on totally blasphemous themes. We refrained from using
another themes than blasphemy and criticism of Christianity. You can not
find there anything else. We like this way and will carry on in that.
Any final thoughts?
