- How has Coherent Liquid Formīs music evolved through the years?
When we started back in 1997, we were pretty much a straight forward death metal band. Through 5 years playing together, experiencing different forms of metal, and music as a whole, and growing as musicians, our sound has expanded from primitave death metal to a wide ranged style of more melodic death grind. We also incorperate some doom, cleaned tone guitars, and clean vocals as well. I think the biggest part is everyone becoming better at their particular instrument.
2- How was "New Existence" received in the underground?
So far we have gotten a lot of compliments about the album. The reviews have been very good. It is getting some positive attention. This is our first real exposure outside of our home scene, and it makes us feel great having the album being so well recieved from all parts of the world. We work really hard in our band, and it is a really good feeling when you have someone you don't know give you compliments about your songs.
3- How would you compare "New Existence" with the four song MCD?
To begin with, the recording is far superior. We recorded the MCD in our rehearsal space in like 6 hours with a four track that was run through a compressor and a couple of processors. Some of the same songs appear on both CDs, but 'New Existence' displays some of our newest material, and is a good indication on the direction our band is heading. 'New Existence' is done totally pro, with pro packaging and recording. We spend a lot of time preparing for that recording too, the songs are more tight and better played then they were on the first CD.
4-Why did you choose to record "New Existence" at the Logic Studios?
Logic Studios is the place to go for metal around here. The engineers name is Brian Bart, he really knows his shit. He knows how metal is supposed to sound, with a totally respectful, professional attitude. Some friends of ours in other bands have recorded there, and the place was highly recommended. Basically, if we wanted to do it right, we needed to go there. When we are ready to record again, that is the place we will go to. I have but good words about Logic Studios and Brian Bart.
5- How is the process of compositions of Liquid Coherent Formīs music?
When we write, we usually start with one basic idea or patern and build off of it. Everybody gets input on how a song should be put together, so there is no one person writting and particular song. The band sits down as a whole and builds off the existing idea. Everybody is involved in the creation of the music which works really well. We all have rather unique tasted in music, so when we sit down and write all of those influences and styles are brought out in each members ideas for a song. This is where all the different elements come from in our music.
6- Which are your memories on your first demo from 1997?
We try not to have any. That thing is just bad. On the rare ocassion that I will pop that into the CD player, I usually end up being horrified. The band as a whole was rough and sloppy. Now we are much better musicians. I do remember being excited, because that was the first time I has actually gone into a recording studio. But aside from that, I wish I could do it over again. The engineer that we had sat and probably smoked a 1/2 ounce of weed while we were paying him to record us. Every 2 minutes it was time for another hit from the bong. I do not mind people smoking weed or whatever, I do not do it, but when we are paying you a decent price for someone to record us,I would like to have it done in a professional manner, with the attention paid to what we are working on. Not taking
a 15 minute break 2 times an hour to hit the pipe.
7- What made the band evolve from their primitive grind/death beginnings to what is Coherent Liquid Form today?
It is really everybody absorbing different elements of metal and music. Becoming more confident in what we are trying to do and accomplish. 5 years is a long time, and everyone has grown as a musician and a person. Gotten more skilled with their instruments, and incorperating all elements into what we write.
8-Which are the bandīs main influences?
Musically there is a wide range. Bands like In Flames, Opeth, Suffocation, Testament, At The Gates, everyone is really big on. Dark Tranquility, Cynic, Immolation, Napalm Death, I could go on forever. The lyrics in our songs are witten about this that and everything. Some are fictional stories, others are about everyday shit, or something that has pissed us off.
9- Which is your studio and live equipment?
Studio and Live is the same. Corey plays on Premier drums (I think), Chris uses Ampeg Amplifiers, with a 5 string Ibenez bass and he has a 7 string bass but I can't remember the brand. Both Fred and myself have Flextone Line 6 heads and floorboards, both with 7 string guitars. Fred has a couple of Ibenez 7 strings and a Schecter. I have 2 Schecter 7 string guitars. The only real difference between Fred's gear and mne is he has a Marshall 4X12 cabinet and I have an Ampeg.
