After listening their previous one I find out that each of the Abscess albums is a step forward from this guys from the Autopsy spirit. And that is good because this is a band that has not become stagnant because of teh popularity of tehir previosu band. There are some slow moments that remind to that band but this guys have found a way to construct more interesting riffs that keep that aggressive and extreme spirit but take the music to new heights. Taking elements from other death metal type of bands and of other styles this guys are continuing their way developing their own style. Chris Reifert drumming is becoming more solid and vocals are extreme and clear due to a good mix. THis band has taken a classical sound and updated and reshaping it into Abscess sound. A good advance from their previous album.

Extremely huge sounding guitars with a bass that doubles them creating a huge wall of riffs....hyperfast drumming with devasating use of the snare drum and ride cymbal...brutal vocals that spit anger on each track. This are the main trademarks of this crushing band. There are some rhythms in tracks like "Survival" that sets the band appart from death metal, sounding like a much more extreme Sepultura. But this guys surely know how to deliver intrincated rhythms in tracks like this one changing from riff to riffa nd from apttern to pattern. The sound is raw and direct making it sound almost like in a live concert. A furious release with amazing guitars and crushing feeling.

A really difficult band to classify. It has elements of rock but they have at the same time really climatic moments. An atmospheric voice is a trademark here. There is plenty of acoustic moments too and exploration of textures that are a fundamental aprt of the music here. A lot of parts of this recording feel like a soundtrack to a movie because of the way the arrangements are done. There is plenty of electronics here and they are essential toa chieve the good results that are presented here. There is plenty of experimentation too. I have to remark the excellent sound that this recording has making each instrument sound polished and aggressive at the same time. A great release that combines melodies and power.

Music by Almighty Sathanas

Lyrics by Almighty Sathanas

Tracks:

1- Jezabel

2- Wrath

3-Almighty Sathanas

Blackness unleashed over mankind by this aggressive black metal band. This band delivers here three tracks of the most extreme black metal possible. The guitars are extremely raw and deliver the type of runs and riffs that the raw black metal style needs. The vocals are aggressive and of the screaming type that could not be out of place in a classic norwegian black metal band. There are some parts in tracks like "JEzabel" (3:10) where the guitars are joined by the bass playing lower lines and I think this is the type of sound that Almighty Sathanas must explore more in the future. The sound of the recording is extremely raw, in the vein of the rawest of the black metal bands. Black metal taken to the extreme in three unholy compositions.

Ana Dies is a good combiantion of aggression and melancholy. The keyboards play here a key role in developing interesting arrangements that are full of sadness, while the guitars give the power to the music. The vocalist remembers me to the one in the Gathering but within a more extreme context. THere is also a more extreme voice that gives a darker feeling to the music, dort of in a symphonic black metal way. There is a good role of the rhythm section, really solid and doing interesting arrangements. The album has really good sound emphasizing the climatic parts because of the good mix. A great mixture of dark climtic parts and powerful riffing..

Coming directly from Peru comes this ultra agrressive band with a music that sometimes reminds me of pure black/death metal and sometimes reminds me of old Slayer (some high pitched screams reminded me of Tom Araya) depending on the mood that they are choosing for the song. I expected more of a gore band becasue of the name of the band but I was surprised of listening pure black/thrash metal. The vocals are really extreme. The music has that old school feeling in the riffs that are direct and effective. THe sound is raw but clearer than in many bands that deliver the same style of music. There is also some thrash metal riffing in the guitars in tracks like "Temptation and Pleasure". Pure darkness in the old style with direct riffs and a thrash influence.

A powerful and epic release full of amazing melodies with a female singer that knows how to be melodic and how to be really heavy when she wants. This is the band of Sarah Jezebel Deva who has sang in Therion, Cradle of filth, Mortiis and more . Heavy guitars are all over the place here playing crushing riffs that create a wall of sound through which the vocal lines are developed. This guitars are teh core of the music here giving a lot of aggression to the music, while teh vocals give a subtle, darker feeling at the same time.THe music here is a great combination of pure power and orchestration done by amazing keyboards. And the arrangements are born from teh imagination of Chris Rehn who plays in Abyssos too.The tracks are powerful and memorable at the same time. "Confide in Me" is a sure hit in the metal realm. Pure heavy / power metal with epic arrangements and good melodies. This is what Archontes unleash on this album. With good guitar riffs, galloping rhythms and virtuoso keyboard lines this band shows here how you can still have originality while doing this style of music. The vocals sound high pitched in many places but this guy prefers to do more mid range vocals that emphasis the overall feeling of the composition..There is plenty of virtuosism here, specially on the gutiars and the keyboards that develope really goood solos. I would mix the guitars louder to add even more power to the music.A release full of cirtuosism and epic feelings.

We can define Ars Moriendi as a mix between three styles: black emtal, death metal and thrash metal. And the band has elements from this three styles. the vocals are of two types: the screaming one that gives a feeling close to bands like Carcass and the more growling one. There is really good musicianship here. Specially the riffs are not the typical of the styles making a clever fusion among them. The rhythm and tempo changes are fuindamental here. There are a lot of technical parts here showing that this guys are extremely well rehearsed. Plus the album has really good sound that makes the guitars shine with pure aggression. A good mixtures of styles taken into an original sound by this killer band called Ars Moriendi.

I would label the music here orchestral or symphonic black death metal because of the heavy orchestration combined with the extreme vocals and guitar riffs. Starting 2005 with an amazing band like Asgaard is a really good idea. Asgaard is for me a band that will change the way in which people see death/black metal. This guys are amazing in combining the heaviest parts with extremely experimental passages full of keyboards that show that this guys know how to apply extreme musicianship to heavier than hell tunes. Multiple different types of voices (in some parts reminded me to the great In the Woods in the great "Omnio" times but with much more keyboards) . Incredible guitar riffs with full originality and a lot of ideas delivered with amazing musicianship. One of the recordings of the year. No words are enough to describe this masterpiece.

Showing plenty of virtuosism the guys in Aura have delivered here five tracks full of symphonic metal. the main thing here are the keyboards full of virtuosism that adorn and embellish each part of the compositions. This keyboards contrast heavily with the guitars that sound heavy and distorted creating riffs that leave space to develope melodies and arrangements. The songs are long enough to allow the band to develope many ideas within each of the tracks. The vocals are more of the middle range type with a lot of versatility, reminding me to James LaBrie. My absolute favorite is "THe power to be", full of aggression and arrangeemnts. A killer release by this good musicians that always leave you wanting more music from them to continue enjoying a good lsitening.

Heavy experimentation is the main thing here. We have sax, violin, trombones and bass playing incredible sounds here. The sax delivers good phrases and interact cleverly with the bass that does good small arrangements in tracks like "Peliczaple". The violin is amazing in creating melancholic melodies and sounds. And the trombone plays some interesting lines and some background sounds that construct interesting moods. It is amazing how this great musicisns start playing something that seems anarchic and then becomes coherent with their good improvisational skills. Pure hard rock with memorable songs. This band has a lot of influences from eighties band which I like in this style of musicA high pitched vocalist that reminds me of eighties band is the main feature here. Direct and effective guitar riffs are the main thing here. Simple rhythms that make the songs memorable. And that is one of the tricks....the simple riffs soon stick in your mind and you will find yourself soon singing this bandīs tunes. Plus, all the compositions here have catchy choruses. There is some heavy metal influences too such as the riff in "Traffic Lights" that reminded me of Judas Priestīs "Heading Out to teh highway" but with a more syncopated feeling. The sound is good nad direct fitting perfectly the mood of the band. Pure rock with memorable songs !!

A couple of years ago we reviewed Brodequinīs previous release. Now we have in our hands this one that is a step forward. the band is making more brutal music each time. I have to say that Brodequin is one of the most brutal bands I have ever listened, and I have listened plenty of them. This is pure brutality in the vein of the most bestial brutal death bands with a certain grindcore feeling in some parts. The guitar riffs are fast and brutal cutting your throat with their intensity. The vocals are extremely guttural, being used as another instrument that adds brutality to the music. The sound is good yet raw adding to the overall bestial feeling. A release that can cause a hard attack or a brain melt because of its sheer intensity.

Cannibal Corpse is a band that appeals to all fans of brutal music because they never dissapoint. Sure you can not ask them to change radically their music but instead they have created their own style being a big influence for many death metal bands. On this new album Cannibal Corpse does what they do better....crushing brains with powerful riffs and devastating rhythms. One thing that I liked is that, specially in OīBrienīs tracks the rhythms are not as fast emphasizing heavier riffs instead of simple speed. Alex Webster is a monster with his bass and he creates the songs thata re more typical of teh Cannibal Corpseīs style. Corpsegrinderīs vocals are as extreme as always and the band is sounding really tight. The album has a really good sound that has te energy of a live concert of the band combined with the tidiness and tigtness of a studio release. Another brutal release from teh masters of the style.

CHAPEL DESECRATOR - OUT TO GET YOU

1- Hysteria

2-Tormentor

3-Out to Get You

4-The Gathering

5-My innerself

6-Metal Revolution

7-Chapel Desecrator

8-Rippin Corps

Chapel Desecratorīs music is pure metal with some elements of eighties thrash metal. Their music is centered on aggressive guitar riffs combined with fast rhythms that leave a lot of space for the vocals and the guitars. The vocals are harsh giving a more extreme feeling to the music. But the main thing here are the guitar riffs, aggressive and twisted in most of the compositions. There are good guitar solos that are a fundamental part here. And also melodies done by the guitars that add a different feeling to the music. THis guys have sure a lot of eighties iunfluences but this influences are cleverly transformed into Chapel Desecratorīs own style. Here we have fast rhythms but with a drumming (programmed?) that is energetic and solid. The sound is a little bit raw, sounding almost like in a live situation. A solid and powerful release.

10-What is your threshold for...

THis is with no doubt one of the releases of the month. Can you combine crushing guitars in sort of an industrial feeling with female vocals that go directly to your soul doing some operistic lines? Yes, you can, just check the tarck "Nocturne" and you will see how beauty can be mixed with electronics and crushing riff generating a really dark atmosphere. No track here is even similar to the other one, with multiple differences in style and mood. Just listening "Wakeuplove" takes us into a more climatic gothic feeling with electronic drums and with amazing male/female vocal harmonies. Or "Fall Into It", a much more atmospheric tracks with keyboards doing a basis for the whispering voice. Here are keyboards embellishing everything creating good arrangements. There are a lot of different vocal types here: from melodic to whispering, from operistic to really aggressive always surprising on each track. But the main characteristic is the dark feeling that the compositions have.

Circle of Dead Children is pure violence unleashed. And is one of the bands that have a greater guitar sound combined with really downtuned bass that play brutal phrases in order to achieve this degree of bestiality. The combination of ultra fast moments with blast beating drums with more midpaced (yet heavier) moments is one of the trademarks of the band. There is plenty of double bass drumming in this bandīs music and the combiantion of this drumming bestilaity with the extremely guttural voices is one key element here. I really loved the heavier riffs such as the ones in 0:33 of "Destiny of the Slug" designed for destrouying the listenerīs brain. The compositions are short and intense and here we have nineteen od them, some really short as the six seconds of "White trash headache" really in the vein of Napalm Deathīs "Scum". This is a band that on each release breaks new boundaries of brutality.

A magnificent intro called "Hypnerotomachia" opens this album. then comes the pure darkness unleashed by this band. Antoinella Raimondiīs soprano vocals are excellent to complement the aggressive guitars and the powerful drumming that Confligo deliver on this album. The music is really deppressive with an extremely dark atmosphere created by the guitar riffs and the growling vocals. The keyboards embellish and orchestrate many passages showing really good musicianship and adding even more darkness to the music. THis is an ideal album to listen with the lights off and letting your imagination fly. All tracks are a good combiantion of aggression and atmospheres with killer interaction between the guitars and the keyboards. The main abnd tahtc omes to my mind while listening to the opening of this Crawler MCD is Rage Against the Machine (because of the beginning of "Mislay 1") but in a much heavier context and combined with more brutality. And the vocals here are really versatile but relly brutal in some parts. Heavy guitars with a cruhing soudn are combined with intense drumming in order to achieve this three compositions full of power. The rhytm sectin is really solid creating powerful passages. Just the beginning with "Chapter One" shows that Ingar Amlienīs music has some vocals in the style of the darkest of metals but that at the same time has influences from other styles, such as thrash metal and pure heavy metal. The rhythms are fast but there are not constant blast beats here, even if there are in tracks like "From the Shadows" The band has in its ranks Kjjetil Hektoen who is the master mind behind Enthral and he sure knows yhow to change rhythms and tempos within the same track. There are some keyboards that add a different feeling to the music, but the main thing here are the guitars tht go from one riff to the other. Just check the aforementioned "From the Shadows" to see how this guys go from the most extreme black metal to a more thrashy part and then back to black. The album has a raw but powerful sound that gives even more strength to the music. Crest of Darkness is a demonstration that black metal can be extremely original and aggressive at the same time.

Tracks:

1- From Below

2-Upon Hallowed Ground

A long climatic beginning in "From Below" leads us directly into the destructive world of Dead Haven. The music here is aggressive with huge guitar riffs that sound sometimes death metal and sometimes more thrash. Dead Haven has cleverly combined different aggressive styles into their own music. that is evident in the vocals that are sometimes black metal of the screaming type and sometimes more death metal, more growling. Each track here is extense and many ideas have been carefully developed in both tracks showing good musicianship and excellent technical skills. there are some guitar melodies that are essential to add a different mood to the songs, but the main thing here is the pure aggression. I have to remark the good sound that this guys have achieved on this recording. This two tracks leavbe you wanting more from Dead Haven, a crushing band.

DECAPOD CLAW - LOST.../CURSED

Label: Toast and Jam Recs.

Year: 2004
Country: U.S.A.

Music by Decapod Claw

Lyrics by Decapod Claw

Tracks:

1- Lost...

2- Cursed

Two tracks full of violence is what you will find on this 7". With a sound that is a combination of utter aggression and mechanical drums, Decapod Claw surprises with this tracks that combine interesting riffs with sort of an industrial feeling in the rhythms. There are som electronic sounds here and there but the main thing here is teh atmosphere that DEcapod Claw has created here, a sound full of oppression due to the use of keyboards, electronic drums and distorted guitars. Track "Cursed" is more electronic giving a different feeling to the music here. The sound is raw and direct making the band really violent at moments. A release that leaves you wanting to listen more from this band.
