The french metal scene has been growing continuously in the last years. Apoplexy is one of the most interesting bands in the style. They are from Strasbourg, close to the frontier with germany. We talk to Romain Lorentz, one of the guitarists from the band.
What can you tell me about your new album?
Just listen to it. No, seriously, this new album is just the next step
in Apoplexy's evolution. We really focused on the composition and the
sound of the songs. In 3 years, we've increased our technique. So now
we are really able to play what we have in our mind.
Do you think that Apoplexy´s songs are becoming more technical?
Yes I do. As I told you before, our technique is better now. But it is not the only reason why our new songs are more technical. It is important for us to always try do do better. Not only in the speed of our songs but also in the melody and the structure of them.
Do you have any deal with record labels or do you prefer to work
independently?
We're independent. We're not against dealing with a record compagny
but we haven't found any deal for the moment. When we looked for a
label, we sent finished CDs and this didn't interest record companies
because it is too expensive for them to buy them. But maybe they're
just not interested in our band.
Why did Dominique leave the band? Was Joanny your first choice to replace him?
Well Dominique was fed up by playing in a band that's why He decided
to stop. They were no trouble between us. The choice of Joanny was a
natural choice. He was a friend of mine and he's been following the
band from the early begining. As He was playing the guitar we asked
him to reach Apoplexy.
How important are this things for your music: Brutality, speed, melodies
and technique?
It's not easy to talk about brutality. Of course, we have to keep a
kind of brutality in our music because Death is brutal. But it depend
on the way you use to be brutal. Speed has not a big importance for
us. We're more looking for energy. And The faster you play, the less
you can be technical. So you can say playing fast needs technique.
That's for sure but it's just mechanic, there's another way of
technique in the harmony and melody , in the way you create your
song. And that is more important for us. That's why we try to keep
strong melody in our guitar parts. My idea is that a good song is a
song that is not boring and that you can feel deep inside your body.
So technique is just a tool to help you to realize this kind of songs.
How has Apoplexy´s music evolved from album to album, starting with
"Bloody Worship"?
When we created Apoplexy, none of us was able to play. So we've
learned together. "Bloody..." was our first realisation, with really
simple songs, but there's something in them that you can find in all
of our songs. I don't know really what it is but this is what makes
Apoplexy sound like that. It's easier for people who listen to our
albums to say what changes exist between each of them. For us, we had a
starting point and now we just continue to play. The more we play, the
more we learn and our music evolves naturally. We just focus on doing
better and better. The only big evolution I can see is a difference
of influence that happened when Dominique's left the band.
Has the band improved since the addition of Manu on bass?
Laurent was a very good bassist and we were really scared to be
unable to find a new one. We were really lucky to find Manu. I think
He is even more technical than Laurent and the really good point is
that He also plays the guitar. As for him it is really new to play in
a band, He is really motived and He has a lot of new ideas, really
different from the kind of Death Metal we play. So, it is a good
opportunity to change our music. It gives us a new energy.
Being so close to the frontier with Germany allows you to play more in
both countries? I think that the german death/grind/black metal scene is one
of the biggest...
We really'd like that it would be so. Unfortunatly it's not the case.
There are a lot of German bands and they all think that they are great.
So German people don't feel the need to look at French bands. But one
thing is sure, when german people love a band they really support it. So I hope this could happen to us one day.
How was the experience of playing with bands such as Vader, Morbid Angel,
Cradle of Filth, Cannibal Corpse or Napalm Death?
When you start to play in a band, you really wish to play with the
bands you like. And it seems so difficult to do. But We were really
lucky and had the opportunity to play with all those great bands. So
we've realized a part of our dream. But once you've done it, you can
see that it's not all and finally it is just gig. The 2 really
important thing are that you've the possibillity to play in front of a
lot of people that would have never come to see you if you'd played alone
and it's a great promotion.
Which are your favorite environment to play your music: small places
like clubs or big festivals with bigger stages?
I would say either small rooms or either big stages like The one we had when we opened for Cannibal. In a small club you're really close to the public and this is a nice feeling. You also don't care about the sound, you play, that's all. In the other hand, when you play on a big stage in front of many people, it really becomes a show. You give energy and you receive it back from the crew. I just dislike middle
stage, generally we play on this kind of stage. So you're not close to the public enough to play with a direct sound and you need to be amplified. And in most of this case, the guys who organise the gig,
hasn't enough material or doesn't know how to use it. So finally, you
have a shiity sound in front of the stage and you're not able to
hear what you play.
What do you think that makes Apoplexy´s music really unique?
Do you think that our music is unique? I don't think so. The music
made by a band is the result of the mix of the way that each
members plays. I mean, take 2 different musician, and make them play
the same song, it will sound differently. It is sure that we haven't
created Death Metal, but we have listened to it a lot of different ones
from the early age of that style. So we've just mixed what we loved.
Are you influenced by technical death metal bands? Are there any other
influences that you would like to mention?
Definetly I would say Cannibal Corpse and Morbid Angel are our
biggest influences. But we also love bands like Death or Loudblast.
But as each member of the band listens to different kinds of music, we
have a lot of different personnal influences like Heavy Metal, Rock,
Blues, Classical Music... Those ones don't affect Apoplexy's music
directly but more in the way each of us plays.
