can your music be described as pure heavy metal? Do you think that this term is too narrow for describing your music?
Yeah! This is the right term. We play only pure heavy metal. Our music recall the sound and the structure of the classic heavy metal songs from 80's. In our songs we don't search at all costs new sound only to follow some trend. We like this music - the classic metal - and we are proud to play it.
how was "The general's awakening" received in the italian and European underground?
Yes, we have received good reviews expecially from the fanzines and the webzines which promote the classic metal. Till now the best reviews come from Germany.
Why did Anthenora choose to play original songs in some gigs and then do Iron maiden tribute shows at the same time?
Because we have two souls: one wants to spread all over the world the maiden faith and the other wants to spread the faith in the classic metal. Ah.ah. We like to tell stories with our music but not with political or religious intentions. We just like to tell something about life, to tell something about the past, the present and the bfuture that could be. For example, the lyrics of our ep "The General's awakening" are about a fantasy story that begin during the 2nd world war in the France occupied by the german troops, involved in the "Operation sea Lion" (one of our next songs) to invade Britain, and goes on till the future with atmospheres that could remind Star Wars or Blade Runner. It's an interesting history, i like it very much.
How did you get to play with Nicko McBrain on his italian tour?
When Mr Nicko Brain decided to come in Italy do play some gigs he asked to his tour manager to find a band which could support him playing with him some maiden's songs. Because we also perform a maiden tribute - one of our soul do you remember?- we were asked to send some promo material (audio, video, photos) and then we were chosen to play with him. It has been a great experience! He is a great musicians but also a great man. We played with him five gigs living with him for a week. The best experience in my life... till now i hope! We have just received an invitation from him, but... it is too soon to speak about it!!!
How is an Anthenora's song composed?
Usually we start from guitar riffs, then we add the rhytmic sections and finally we adapt the lyrics. Stefano Pomero is our riffs maker, he is a machine of war made to create riffs. I'm not jocking... it's true. He is the granitic creative engine of the band.
Which is your memory on the "Bring me to hell" and "Heretical Symphonies" demo tapes?
The first Anthenora's demo: "Bring me to hell" was an hard rock work, we were young and the songs were very simple. On the contrary, "Heretical symphonies" was on the whole an articulated work with songs very lenght ( 7 or 8 min long) and also an instrumental one, "Requiem". Also the sound was heavier than in "Brig me to hell" and more similar to that we have now. In few words, we left hard rock to join an heavy meyal sound.
How do you see Anthenora's evolution, now twelve years after the birth of the band?
We started to play togheter when we were young and togheter we've become men. We are a band of friend. In twelve years we've changed only three members. This is great! And now we have reached one of the goals we had when we started: play with one member of Iron Maiden.
Which is the equipment you use live and in studio?
We use the same equipment in live and in studio 'cause we like the live sound.
Live Anthenora used Premier drum and Paiste Cymbals, VicFirth drumstiks -
www.vicfirth.com (i'm endorser of it). Gibson, Ibanez and Bachmann guitars (which is an italian craftsman production endorsing Pooma and Gabro), Marshall and Hartke amplification systems, Sehnaiser microphones. On studio we used the same equipment except for the vintage amplies that Steeve, Pooma and gabro used.
Do you have any other musical projects?
Yes. We hope to get a contract and to record a full lenght album. We have great ideas always on the path of heavy metal! And, because of we are above all a live-band, we hope to play hundreds of gigs all over the world to spread our grim expression to "steel brothers".
