Interview with Thyrfing´s guitarist Patrik Lindgren. Thanks a lot to Anne Marie Bowman from Manic Prods for making this interview possible
How would you compare "Vansinnesvisor" with "Urkraft"?
There is a huge step between these albums. The production is more professional, heavy and clear. The songs are shorter, better arranged, more to the point and have a darker and more powerful approach. Maybe we could say that "Urkraft" was somewhat a "test" for this new album. We wanted to take a new path from the extremely key-dominated "Valdr Galga", maybe we didn't succeeded to 100%, but we certainly did on "Vansinnesvisor".
Why did you choose Daniel Bergstrand instead of Tommy Tägtgren to do the mix of "Vansinnesvisor"?
First of all, Daniel produced the album, not only mixed it. As a matter of fact, we had booked the Abyss Studio for May 2001, but eventually found out that we would never complete the material in time. After that Tommy was booked for another year, so we had to look for something else.
How important have become instruments like homemade percussion or fiddles for Thyrfing´s music?
It's not that important, but it gives a special touch and atmosphere to the album I think. All these additional sounds and overdubs are things that you could try out and experiment with for ages, but it should be seen as a compliment to the backbone of the music; the rhythm section, guitars, and vocals.
Which is the concept behind "Vansinnesvisor" lyrics?
This time we moved away a bit from our previously so obvious "heroic-viking-lyrics", the atmosphere is (just as the music) a little darker, more folkloric and foreboding. Also, we they are more personal and most of them are rooted in our views upon the world of today, but written in an "old" way concerning the language and metaphors.
Is a natural progression that each Thyrfing album sounds darker than the previous one?
I can't agree that each release is darker than it's forerunner. For example, both the demos and the debut album has a darker atmosphere than "Valdr Galga" in my opinion. I guess you could say that more or less everything that happens to the progression of Thyrfing is "natural" as everything we do comes from our inner self and minds...
How were the songs in "Vansinnesvisor" composed?
It's different from track to track. Some of them were completed to 95% by a single person, and other were written in the rehearsal place, just jamming. There were never a special formula for the progress.
Which is your opinion nowadays of your "Solen Svartnar" and "Hednaland" demos?
Well, they are documents about the musical past of Thyrfing, how we sounded back then. They will always have a nostalgic and personal value for us, eventhough we not class them as superior releases nowadays.
Do you have any touring plans for the rest of 2002?
We will do one gig here in Stockholm together with Dismember and two more, yet unconfirmed acts. After that we will do four gigs in Benelux with Cruachan and Shadowbreed in December. That's about it.
Any final words?
