Barry Guy - solo bass and duo with
Maya Homburger - violin

One of the world's leading free improvisors, Barry Guy is an innovative
double bass player and composer whos creative diversity in the fields of Jazz
improvisation, solo recitals, chamber and orchestral performance is the
outcome both of an unusually varied training and a zest for experimentation,
underpinned by a dedication to the double bass and the ideal of musical
communication.

He is founder and Artistic Director of the London Jazz Composers Orchestra
for which he has written several extended works with recordings of the
following: ODE (Incus 1972 and re-released on Intakt 1996), STRINGER (FMP
1980), POLYHYMNIA on ZURICH CONCERTS (Intakt 1988), HARMOS (Intakt 1989),
DOUBLE TROUBLE (Intakt 1990), THEORIA (Intakt 1992) with the Swiss pianist
Irene Schweizer as soloist, PORTRAITS (Intakt 1994) and "THREE PIECES FOR
ORCHESTRA" (Intakt 1997).
His concert works have been widely performed and his skilful and inventive
writing has resulted in an exceptional series of compositions : FLAGWALK
(1983), THE EYE OF SILENCE (1988), LOOK UP ! ( 1990 ), AFTER THE RAIN (
1992 ), BIRD GONG GAME (1992), FALLINGWATER (1996) and REDSHIFT (1998).
LOOK UP ! was honoured with the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for
Chamber-Scale Composition 1991-1992. Guys compositions usually reflect a
personal liaison with musicians and ensembles he writes for. As such, the
commissions arrive from chamber orchestras, chamber groups and soloists
interested in contemporary musical performance with a special commitment to
communicate with the audience. Guys works therefore have a sense of
freshness without recourse to ideological excesses or scores that baffle
players to the extent that performing becomes a trial. The scores however
are virtuosic and often present innovative sonorities and extended
instrumental techniques and as a performer himself he is ideally placed to
asses these possibilities.

Barry Guy continues to give solo recitals throughout Europe and the USA as
well as performing with Evan Parker/Paul Lytton Trio, in Duos with pianists
Irene Schweizer and Paul Plimley in Trio with Marilyn Crispell and Gerry
Hemingway and with Bill Dixon's quartet. Recently he has been appearing
with the American pianist Cecil Taylor and the Californian based group ROOM
with Larry Ochs. 1991 saw the foundation of Guy's sextet ELSIEJO with Evan
Parker, Irène Schweizer, Barre Phillips, Conrad Bauer and Paul Lytton.
Composing commissions at present are for Red Byrd, "Ensemble Son" and Intakt.
Guy has recorded over 80 albums with various Jazz formations. His latest
releases are ARCUS, a duo with Barre Phillips, ELSIE JO (Barry Guy,Irene
Schweizer,Evan Parker,Connie Bauer, Barre Phillips, Paul Lytton) on the
MAYA Label, THEORIA (London Jazz Composers Orchestra with Irene
Schweizer), PORTRAITS (London Jazz Composers Orchestra) on INTAKT, FIZZLES,
Barry Guy Solo, IMAGINARY VALUES with Evan Parker and Paul Lytton, WITCH
GONG GAME II/10 with the NOW Orchestra (Vancouver) on MAYA, VADE MECUM with
Bill Dixon, William Parker, Tony Oxley, ISKRA 1903 with Paul Rutherford,
Phil Wachsmann, "Obliquities" with Evan Parker, CASCADES with Marilyn
Crispell and Gerry Hemingway and "You forget to answer" with Mats
Gustafsson and Raymond Strid and "Three Pieces for Orchestra" (London Jazz
Composers Orchestra ) on Intakt.
1993 saw the release of AFTER THE RAIN with the City of London Sinfonia
conducted by Richard Hickox, on the NMC label and in 1996 the City of
London Sinfonia premiered his major composition "Fallingwater".
Latest recordings include a duo album with the Swedish saxophonist Mats
Gustafsson and also a CD with the Canadian pianist Paul Plimley and
Vademecum II with Bill Dixon, William Parker and Tony Oxley. ECM has also
just released a CD with Barry Guy's compositions "Ceremony" (violin and
tape) and "Celebration" (solo violin) amongst others.

Maya Homburger

Born and educated in Switzerland, Maya Homburger moved to England in 1986
to join John Eliot Gardiner's English Baroque Soloists, Trevor Pinnock's
The English Concert and other period instrument groups. Ever since meeting
the composer and solo bassist Barry Guy - on the occasion of an extended
concert tour with Christopher Hogwood's Academy of Ancient Music - she has
devoted her time between managing his London Jazz Composers Orchestra,
running their CD label MAYA recordings and developing her own personal
style on the baroque violin, specialising more and more in chamber music
and solo performance. She is leader of the groups The Chandos Baroque
Players and Trio Virtuoso. In 1993 she recorded the twelve fantasies for
solo violin by G.Ph.Telemann and in 1995 the six sonatas for violin and
harpsichord by J.S. Bach together with Malcolm Proud. Having been invited
to play Telemann for the Jazz Festival in Rive de Gier (France) she shared
the concert with Barry Guy combining baroque and new compositions and
improvisations. For this occasion they commissioned Buxton Orr and Giles
Swayne to write pieces for baroque violin and double bass. Other new works
in her repertoire include Barry Guy's compositions Celebration for solo
violin, Ceremony for violin and tape and the duo Slow right arm by Roger
Marsh for baroque violin and double bass. In 1996 Barry Guy and Maya
Homburger moved to Ireland, Thomastown where they hope to contribute both
to the early as well as the contemporary music scene.
The German label ECM has just released the first CD of the Duo
Homburger/Guy called "Ceremony" with works by Barry Guy and H.I.F.Biber for
baroque violin and double bass.
Her instrument is an Italian baroque violin, made by Antonio dalla Costa,
Treviso in 1740 which is in its original baroque condition.

February 6th, 2001:

This is a press statement from Painface:

Hey everyone! How's it going? Here's a little update on what
Painface is up to:

1. We have been trying out several drummers, and one will be chosen
soon. If any of you are a drummer and are interested in playing for
us, feel free to send me your information anyhow, since drummers tend
to be a relvolving door with us! Might as well be prepared in
advance. (I know, that's not thinking positively, but you'll have
that.)

2. We just finished mastering the 3-song demo we made with our
former drummer, Danny, this week. It sounds great! It won't be for
sale yet, but one of the three will be placed on our MP3 site VERY
soon. The songs we recorded were: Lust, On A Pale Horse (from our
original 4-song demo), and The Darker Side (1st edit).

3. We signed-on with Maelstrom Music PR. Maelstrom is a music
publicity company headed by Curtis Smith, who has worked with Slayer,
Johnny Cash, Marilyn Manson (Antichrist Superstar album), and many
others. You should be seeing us in major music magazines by summer!

4. We WERE asked to open for Soulfly on Feb. 17th, but we were taken
out of the line-up when signed-band Shuvel became available for the
show. The promotion company in charge felt bad about it, and offered
us an opening slot for the Valentine's Day Morbid Angel show, but we
had to respectfully decline, as we felt we should spend more time
with our drummer/s. However, this all bodes well for us in the
future: big show promoters know our name and looking at us.

5. Please be sure to take 2 minutes out of your day to vote for one
of our songs on Farmclub:

http://www.farmclub.com/listen/artisthome/static/10011328.html

The votes start over at zero each month, and you can vote everyday,
WITHOUT listening to the songs. Just click on the song title, then
click "vote" when the box opens up. It takes a LOT of votes to put a
band in the top 10, so we need everyone's help!

6. We are doing chats twice a week in the Painface chat room

(
www.painface.com) on Saturday night and Wednesday night. We all try
to be on during these chats, and usually are, but occasionally we
call a practice during these times. I urge all of you to get to know
each other, as well as us, in the Painface chat room!

We appreciate ALL of your support, and hope to see you all this year
at a show in your area!
