Fernando Ricciardulli, bassist from heavy metal band Azeroth from Argentina kindly answered all the questions that we sent him. Thanks a lot to Gabriela Sisti for making this interview possible.
How has been your debut album going?
Well, we can not complain! Despite the reigning misery (and the bootlegs) it has sold quite well and we have licensed it to Spain and Japan. Also, it has obtained good reviews from important media like Kerrang -Spain- (4/5), Rock Hard -Germany- (8), Roadie Crew -Brazil-(9), Rock Brigade -Brazil- (8,5), etc. And the most important thing is that the people liked it a lot and they show that on every concert...
Do you have new material composed? Is similar to the songs in the album?
We are finishing the arrangements of the songs, to start rehearsing very hard before getting into the studio. The date that we have set is september of this year, and if everything goes all right the album will be on the shops in the beginning of 2002. We are going to have an important guest: Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), who is going to do all the choruses in the album, this is going to be mixed again in Europe and the cover art will be done by Eric Phillipe (Rhapsody, Luca Turilli, Sonata Artica, etc.), who has worked with us on the first album.
The songs have more variety and worked, but they are in the same path than the first record: itīs heavy metal!!!!!!.
Which reactions have brought the fact that you have been elected in some magazines as "Best Newcoming Band 2000"?
Well,it really took us by surprise and it made us proud of all the hard work that we have been doing for the last six years, it gives us strength to fight!.
on the debut CD the voices were done by Adrián Barilari and Christian Bertoncelli instead of only one singer?
Because we didnīt want this to be considered as a project of a singer from another band; that record is as Azeroth as those that are going to come: Adrián and Christian only sang what we have already composed (regarding the vocals). In that moment we didnīt have a singer, and we wanted to release our material that was already recorded... and that is also how Dieguito (singer) appeared, and we can not complain about how things happened.
What do you think sets Azeroth apart from the other heavy/power metal bands from Argentina?
I think that this is not something that I have to say, the media or the peoples must say it... what I can say is that speaking about the sound of our record, it is very different from the other bands in the scene because it was mixed by a guy who knows what to do (Charlie Bauefeind), and he knows how to make a heavy metal band sound.
Who is the replacement to Oscar Castro on guitar? How did you met him?
He is called Pablo Gamarra, and we met him thanks to our friend Gustavo Gorosito (guitarist from Imperio). The truth is that apart from being an excelent musician he is a great person and that is equally or more important than if he plays well.
Can you tell me a little bit about the beginnings of the band?
The band was formed in 1995 when Mauge, me (Fernando) and Juan got together to form a strong and fast metal band, without losing even a little bit of melody. There were a lot of members and we did a lot of shows through all the circuit of Cap. Fed. (Buenos Aires) and Gran Buenos Aires.; also we did a lot of shows in other parts of the country :Gral. Roca (Río Negro), Bahía Blanca and San Nicolás. In te beginning of 1999 we decided to record our debut album self financing it (we had released in 1998 a three song demo for promotion only), but as we were not very happy with the work of our vocalist we decided to fire him, we y}talked with our friend Christian Bertoncelli who helped us with some songs and then with Adrián (who had already recorded "Historias de Hoy" in the original recording session) to sing the rest of the songs. After having recorded the vocals, Nems offered to release the record and so it was released in mid 2000. We did a lot of shows on 2000 (with Diego on vocals and Oscar on guitar): we opened for Nightwish, and in the Festival Power Progesivo (with Vision Divine and Labyrith), and in the Metal Rock festival IV (with Barón Rojo), besides playing in Bahia Blanca and Mar del Plata. In 2001 (with the definitive lineup: Diego Valdez on vocals, Juan Manuel Villagra on GUITAR, Pablo Gamarra on the other GUITAR, María Eugenia Ricciardulli on DRUMS, Gustavo Jawanske on KEYBOARDS AND myself Fernando Ricciardulli-on BASS) I have to point out the participation as guests of Helloween and Shaman, and also the shows that we did in Cemento together with Imperio (Bs As Power Metal Fest) and other Argentinean bands, and in the Showcenter of Haedo closing the festival Cumbre del Metal III.
Did you ever thought about doing the lyrics in english instead of spanish?
Yes, in fact the second album is going to be recorded in two versions: in english and in spanish, because we think that we can achieve a competitive sound for the european market time will tell!
How is the music of Azeroth composed? Somebody brings the ideas or the songs are created among all the band?
In my particular case I work each song with the computer, with all the instruments in basic state, to show them to the other guys, so everybody can do the arrangements or change the things that we like to change, after that Dieguito and Juan (with the aproval of the rest) work on the vocal melodies. Juan also brings his songs, and we put them on the computer that allows you to see the idea of each song with almost all the instruments and allows to develope much more the arrangements and harmonies.
Which are the main musical influences of the members of the band?
Básically everything that is heavy, thrash, power, etc., plus everybody listens to other styles of music and we think that all the music that you listen influences you in one way or the other.
How do you see the heavy/power metal scene in Argentina? Donīt you think it has become stagnant?
Maybe, but it is only arising and the good thing is that there are more bands that try to sound better and be professional!. But we all know that this is not Europe or any other place where the economic situation is different: here there is no money, the musicians can not live of their music (so it can not be dedicated to learning his instrument or composition or arrangements as much as maybe an european), people donīt support national bands ( they pay $25 to see a mediocre band from outside than paying $5 to see one that is maybe much better but is Argentinean - or are you going to tell me that Hammerfall is a great band eh?-)... well, itīs Argentina, what can we do?. But I must remark the strength of this new wave of bands that is arising now trying to do what they do seriously, and trying to be professional.
Which are your plans for the inmediate future?
Mainly rehearse very hard to enter the studio to record in the best way. There are possibilities to make some shows in some places of the country, but I think that we wonīt do them until we finish the recording of the new album.
Something more to add?
